Nato in Inghilterra nel 1953 da genitori irlandesi. È cresciuto a Londra e ha studiato inglese e giurisprudenza al Queens’ College di Cambridge, prima di essere ammesso all’Ordine degli avvocati del Middle Temple nel 1978.
Declan Donnellan è co-direttore artistico di Cheek by Jowl, insieme al suo compagno, lo scenografo Nick Ormerod. Hanno fondato Cheek by Jowl nel 1981, per la quale hanno creato oltre 40 produzioni, rappresentate in più di 400 città, in sei continenti.
La prima produzione di Cheek by Jowl, The Country Wife, è stata presentata al Festival di Edimburgo nel 1981. Nel 1989 è stato nominato direttore associato del Royal National Theatre di Londra.
Donnellan ha diretto per il Festival di Avignone (Le Cid); Il Teatro Drammatico Maly di San Pietroburgo (Il racconto d’inverno), il Teatro Noel Coward (Shakespeare in Love), il Piccolo Teatro di Milano (La tragedia del vendicatore), nonché l’opera Falstaff per il Festival di Salisburgo e i balletti Romeo e Giulietta e Amleto per il Teatro Bolshoi di Mosca.
Ha scritto un’opera teatrale, Lady Betty, e tradotto opere di De Musset, Erdmann, Sofocle e Lermontov. Ha ricevuto premi a Londra, Mosca, Parigi e New York, tra cui quattro Olivier Awards, l’Ordine di Carlo Magno di Andorra, il Premio Internazionale Stanislavskij di Mosca e il Leone d’Oro di Venezia.
Il suo primo lungometraggio, Bel Ami, co-diretto con Nick Ormerod e interpretato da Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci e Robert Pattinson, è uscito nel 2012.
Il suo libro, “L’attore e il bersaglio”, è stato originariamente pubblicato in russo (1999) e da allora è stato tradotto in 15 lingue, tra cui francese, spagnolo, italiano, tedesco, rumeno e mandarino. La terza edizione francese e la quarta inglese sono state pubblicate nel 2018.
DECLAN DONNELLAN
Declan Donnellan was born in England of Irish parents in 1953. He grew up in London and read English and Law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, before being called to the Bar at the Middle Temple in 1978.
Declan Donnellan is joint Artistic Director of Cheek by Jowl, with his partner, the designer Nick Ormerod. They formed Cheek by Jowl in 1981, for which they have created over 40 productions, performing in over 400 cities, across six continents.
Cheek by Jowl’s first production, The Country Wife, was presented at the Edinburgh festival in 1981. In 1989, he was made Associate Director of the Royal National Theatre in London.
Donnellan has directed for the Avignon Festival (Le Cid); The Maly Drama Theatre of Saint Petersburg (The Winter’s Tale), The Noel Coward Theatre (Shakespeare in Love), the Piccolo Teatro Milano (The Revenger’s Tragedy) as well as the opera Falstaff for the Salzburg Festival and the ballets Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet for the Bolshoi in Moscow.
He has written a play, Lady Betty, and translated works by De Musset, Erdman, Sophocles and Lermontov. He has received awards in London, Moscow, Paris and New York, including four Olivier Awards, the Order of Charlemagne of Andorra, the Stanislavski International Prize in Moscow and the Golden Lion of Venice.
His first feature film, Bel Ami, co-directed with Nick Ormerod, and starring Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci, and Robert Pattinson, was released in 2012.
His book, The Actor and the Target, was originally published in Russian (1999), and has since appeared in 15 languages, including French, Spanish, Italian, German, Romanian and Mandarin. The third French and fourth English edition were published in 2018.
NICK ORMEROD
Dopo essersi laureato in giurisprudenza, Nick Ormerod si è specializzato in scenografia teatrale presso la Wimbledon School of Art. Il suo primo incarico in ambito teatrale è stato un anno come assistente al Lyceum Theatre di Edimburgo. In seguito, ha collaborato con Declan Donnellan a diverse produzioni per il Royal Court e le Arts Educational Schools, prima di fondare la compagnia Cheek by Jowl nel 1981. Da allora, insieme a Declan Donnellan, ha portato i suoi spettacoli in oltre 400 città, ricevendo premi in tutto il mondo.

NICK ORMEROD
After qualifying as a barrister, Nick Ormerod trained in Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art. His first job in theatre was a year as an assistant at the Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh. From there he went on to work with Declan Donnellan on various productions for the Royal Court and Arts Educational Schools before forming Cheek by Jowl in 1981. Since then, he and Declan Donnellan have taken work to over 400 cities, and received awards across the world.
Ormerod’s work is characterised by its simplicity and directness, an approach that has shaped the
visual signature of the company’s work and led to winning the Corral de Comedias Award with Donnellan in 2008 and an Olivier Award nomination for Designer of the Year (1988) for A Family Affair, The Tempest and Philoctetes. In 2017, he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for services to theatre design.
